Friday Post: Colleges Restrict Four Loko, As Health Concerns Rise.

"Little Rhody's big state school is banning Four Loko, the caffeine-boosted alcohol drink that's often called "blackout in a can." These popular Engergy/Alcoholic beverages are being banned on college campuses because they are too dangerous. At a recent concert at the URI campus, 30 people were treated for illnesses or injuries related to alcohol. They're looked at as being dangerous for college students because they are very inexpensive for how potent they are. This incident at URI is not the only one that's happened based off of these drinks, there have been issues reported at Central Washington University and Kansas State. So stores around college campuses are beginning to ban the drink. I personally think it's a dumb idea. Yes I agree that dangerous things can spawn off of kids drinking lokos, but just because stores in the area don't have the drinks, does not mean no one can get them. I bet some students are willing to make a 10-30 minute drive for their fix. Just like anything else that people are not supposed to have access to, they find a way.

  1. I think it's at least worth a try, it is the schools responsibility after all to try to keep us from harm. These drinks wouldn't be so terrible if kids only drank one or two, instead of six or seven. It's scary to think what a person will do just to have fun. But with such high numbers of kids getting ill off of them, I don't think banning them is the worst idea. It won't stop everyone, as you said, but hopefully it will help a few people make better choices.

  2. I guess it's worth a try, but I agree with you on the fact that students will be taking alternative measures on consuming these drinks. Alcohol plus energy can only lead to bad things. But even with any alcohol, health risks are involved, and I'm sure many student's stomachs will be pumped on the weekends regardless.

  3. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. ..Props to the schools and such that are trying to take action and prevent injury and such. But there isn't a whole lot they're going to be able to do. Just like anything else, minors get cigarettes, they get beer, people still get and smoke weed even though it's illegal. These drinks being banned more than likely won't put more than a slight dent in the issue.
